This paper aims to provide broader understanding of the challenges and transformations required to achieve a nature positive future for water utilities and the water sector. It identifies 5 focus areas for water utilities to protect and enhance natural systems while continuing to deliver essential water supply and wastewater services. These focus areas are:
- resilient water supplies and water conservation
- efficient and effective treatment reducing water pollution
- achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions
- regeneration to restore balance with nature
- systems transition and partnerships
These 5 focus areas are supported in the paper by case studies that highlight a range of innovative practices and partnerships. These practices and partnerships demonstrate how Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand water utilities can leverage operations, infrastructure, and community engagement to foster biodiversity and support sustainable water management.
