This guidance outlines the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's (ACCC) view of what businesses need to do when making environmental claims to comply with the Australian Consumer Law and the ACCC’s expectations for good practice when making these claims. The ACCC has identified a series of eight practical principles that it encourages businesses to apply when making environmental claims. If businesses follow these principles, they are less likely to mislead consumers and contravene the law.
While this guidance has been designed to assist businesses comply with the law, it is not legal advice. The ACCC cannot provide a definitive interpretation of the law because that is the role of the courts, having regard to the facts of each particular case.
